You can see in the image herein a mapping of the level of attention of the user when in front of the resulting page of their query submitted to a search engine (Google in this case). You can see that the most of attention is caught on the left side of the screen and on top, forming a triangle. It´s then important that you know that organic results are on that side of the screen, while sponsored results or links ("Adwords") are on the left side. See how different the level of attention is caught there, drops to none. The path followed in general by a reader online doesn´t differ from a reader anywhere else -in the western culture-: we tend to follow an inverted N, we go from top-left to down-left we go back to top right and we finish at down right. So, it´s a matter of fact, that paid advertising campaigns alone are not easily going to bring you visitors, but building a well optimized website which would rank atop of search results. Search-engine-friendly site building, optimization -seo- and submition-based marketing are parts of my work, area in which I am specialized.
